Prime Minister of Kenya
Raila Odinga is a Kenyan politician, currently serving as the Prime Minister of Kenya in a coalition government. He has served as a Member of Parliament for Langata since 1992, was Minister of Energy from 2001 to 2002, and was Minister of Roads, Public Works and Housing from 2003 to 2005. He was the main opposition candidate in the disputed 2007 presidential election. Following a post-electoral crisis that resulted in the deaths of 1,500 people and the displacement of 600,000 more, Odinga took office as Prime Minister, at the head of a national unity government, in April 2008.
I want to say that I support the World March for Peace and Nonviolence. I think this is an idea whose time has come. The world has been confronted with so many wars, confrontations which caused too much suffering to the people of the world. We want a peaceful world. The world has been through lots of talks about non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, we used to have what they called strategic arms limitation talks (salt). All these efforts have come to nought. The time has come for the people of the world to unite together to say "we want a peaceful world" so that resources which are spent on constructing weapons can be used to eradicate poverty, can be used to eradicate diseases. So many people are dying from preventable diseases like malaria, bilharzia, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. Let us use the resources judiciously for the protection and development of the life of mankind on this earth.
