Ans Westra is a well known and respected New Zealand photographer who was born in the Netherlands but moved here in 1957. She has dedicated her life to capturing Maori culture through the lens and in 1998 was recognised for her works when she received the Companion of the Order of NZ Merit. In 2007 she became an Arts Foundation New Zealand Icon Artist. Her most recent work was published in a book by the Asia NZ Foundation called ‘The Crescent Moon: The Asian Face of Islam in New Zealand’.
